Julia Westerbeke

My work revisits the wondrous, fragmented and bizarre nature of childhood memories, generating worlds concerned with beauty, exploration and play. For me, memories of childhood are intimately tied to the feminine thanks to years of playing at my mother’s fashion design studio, building forts from rolls of fabric and marveling at towering archives of lace. Through intricate drawings and installations, I champion the feminine in tandem with the decorative, pointing to the visceral powers therein. The works are dazzling but a little “off,” more unearthly fantasy (a skewed dream or memory) than traditional embellishment.
