Kate Barclay

With a background in sculpture, Kate is inspired by the complexity in the almost nothing--the way a small pile of cheerios can mimic the movement of giant mounds of dirt by bulldozers and construction workers. She is observing things in the world on the granular level, capturing the minute shifts that occur in her ever-evolving campus landscape, and documenting and articulating spaces that would otherwise go unnoticed. She imagines herself working parallel to the construction workers, in the same landscape, but toward a dissimilar goal. She is not engaged in a process that produces purely additive or progressive results (such as the creation of new buildings); her method involves many idiosyncratic transpositions of subject matter and materials, altering one’s perception of the landscape and their place within it.
