Place is characterized by the voice of a war veteran whose chapped fingers grasps for bills as you wait for the red light to go green, the off colored magenta flowers that wave good-bye as you speed down the winding interstate, a hybrid scent of fuel and ground beef on cracked pavement and the prick of a palm frond that resists its fallen status. Crystal Z. Campbell's art practice (sculpture, installation, mixed-media drawings, video) is rooted in the construction of places by foraging residue from people and things. Campbell, an Oklahoma native, draws from a background in Africana Studies, a stint as a social worker and a hybrid sense of self to invent fictions of the real.
