David White

David White uses art historical conventions as a method of engaging individuals or groups at the scale of the neighborhood. Through the recontextualization of these conventions, he creates forms and situations that encourage, whether individual or participatory, open systems of production and distribution that can advance new interpretations of the everyday and public discourse. Though the use of video, sculpture and performance, the trajectory of White's work has oscillated between two critical perspectives. One: the individual's identification with the temporal banality of everyday objects and actions; Two; ephemeral artistic practices that can facilitate new modes of sociability and collaboration. These forms and situations may be as diverse as using a bicycle taxi to record recent local histories on video, creating a residency at a local Business Improvement District office, or establishing an art space as tool for enabling neighborhood connectivity.
