Esteban Martinez is attracted to concepts of exposure, transparency and the perverse in a surveyed/voyeuristic culture. Photography, video and mixed media are tools he uses to explore ideas of surveillance, counter surveillance and self-voyeuristic acts. "I'm interested in the politics of permission when it comes to our own image, we may feel violated by surveillance and its constant gaze or when we supply our images on the web for all to see."

In the projects of Esteban's work, thou visually different, are closely related. One closely examines and defies the technological grown at the San Diego/Tijuana border by U.S. surveillance, aesthetic zing a counter surveillance method for the exposed communities on the Mexican frontier. The other unveils and provides a visual space for the sharing of a taboo theme, allowing individuals to present markings produced by acts of affection.

"I believe that humor and irony are a must to exist in my work. Not only do I want to be entertained when I create it but I want to be re entertained when I'm able to view it again."
