Sheryl Oring

Sheryl Oring addresses issues of democracy, politics, language, communication and memory through multimedia installations, public performance, works on paper, photography and writing. Much of her art depends on public interaction and participation and is informed by her past experience as a newspaper journalist.

With "I Wish to Say," she combined many of these ideas and influences into one project. For this work, Oring dressed up as a 1950s secretary, set up a portable public office - complete with a manual typewriter - and invited people to dictate postcards to the President. Carbon copies of the resulting documents plus photographs of the participants are the materials she is working with now.
