David White

David White uses the recontextualization of institutional conventions as a method of engaging individuals or groups at the scale of the neighborhood. Through this recontextualization, he creates forms and situations that encourage, whether individual or participatory, open systems that can advance new interpretations of the everyday and public discourse. As an example, in 2007 he established an art space as method of examining how the form of the gallery can become a flexible space easily modified to fit vernacular forms, such as a garage sale, a community supported agriculture distribution site, and a temporary diner; as well as to act as site for production, exhibition, performance and curation of art events. This space attempts to blur the lines between individual art practice, the studio, the gallery and the neighborhood to facilitate new modes of sociability and collaboration.
