...Some of the European Abstractionists shifted to other mediums, while Van Doesburg returned to painting and developed the concept of Concrete Art. “Today the idea of artistic form is as obsolete as the idea of natural form… We speak of concrete and not abstract painting because nothing is more concrete, more real than a line, a color, a surface.” This revelation came after Rodchenko’s claim that he had “reduced painting to its logical conclusion” and affirmed, “[Its] all over. Every plane is a plane and there is to be no more representation.” However, this was by no means an end, rather it was a new beginning for painting. Van Doesburg’s idea of Concrete Art fell along similar lines as Rodchenko’s reduction of painting in which geometric abstraction was re-qualified as reality, distancing it from abstraction in the traditional sense of possessing an intrinsic form and relying on metaphor or metaphysics. Rather, the plastic qualities of the art reflectively represented actual existence – true being via continued existence as a material form. This meant salvation from the unattainable social aspirations once ascribed to his work. His entire oeuvre up to that point could be rescued and re-examined under the new concept of Concrete Art....
